Dormer Window

Dormer windows have become a popular way to add space to an attic area and create an attractive look to the house while keeping within building regulations. Newbould Roofing now offers a service to add dormer windows to your home for our customers across Sheffield.

What is a dormer window?

A dormer window is a vertical window that has its own roof and is usually positioned on the sloping area of a roof.  They were originally a way to combat the trend of not putting windows on the second floor of a cottage and are often used in bungalows – hence the term dormer bungalow.  They have also become popular in the attic space where they make an excellent solution to the sloping roof problem.

The dormer window can transform that cramped attic space into an airy, usable part of the house by creating both headroom and floor space while also providing a source of natural light and ventilation.

Types of dormer window

The simple flat roof dormer is the most popular style in use around the UK and is the most budget-friendly.  It also creates the larger amount of internal space.  You can also use a shed former which features a flat single planed roof, but this then slopes downwards at an angle that is shallower than the rest of the roof.  Homes with gable roofs often mean shed dormers need a different type of roofing to the rest of the house.

A gable front dormer, also known as a dog-house dormer, is an attractive option that has a gable wall extension build up to the ridgeline and a new area of roof built outwards from it.  A hipped roof dormer is another option that uses three sloping planes of a hipped roof that meet at the ridge of a dormer.
